Severe menstrual cramps are an indication of endometriosis

Many women experience regular symptoms during their menstrual period. If these conditions are particularly severe, this may indicate undetected endometriosis, i.e. an overgrowth of the endometrium.

Menstrual pain is known by almost every woman. But if the monthly bleeding becomes painful and pain occurs in different places, there may be an endometriosis behind it. Pain caused by endometriosis usually occurs on the days before and during the menstrual period. Then they disappeared again. It can hurt not only in the lower abdomen, but also in the back and on old scars as well as when urinating, during bowel movements or during sex.

Around one in ten women affected

The professional association of gynecologists (BVF) believes that probably one in ten women is affected by endometriosis. The disease, in which mucosal cells from the uterus settle elsewhere in the body, is often only discovered after years because of the ambiguous symptoms. If women have the pain mentioned above especially in connection with their period, they should describe it to their gynecologist.

How is endometriosis diagnosed?

The doctor can already find signs of endometriosis using ultrasound. However, security is only a mirror examination. This small operation can also treat sick areas immediately. However, drugs such as synthetic progestogens, birth control pills or anti-inflammatory pain relievers may also help. Pregnancy can also dry out endometriosis, so to speak. At the same time, the disease is often the cause of unwanted childlessness. (vb; source: dpa / tmn)
