Arranging medical appointments by phone or online
If you want to have an appointment in a specialist practice, you usually have to be very patient. Waiting times of one month or longer are not uncommon. To prevent this from happening, the appointment service of the statutory health insurance associations can be used. However, there are a number of things to pay attention to to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
An appointment with a dermatologist? Of course - in half a year. To prevent this from happening, there is an appointment service provided by the statutory health insurance associations. To use it, you need twelve digits.
Short medical appointments are only possible with a code
Anyone who receives a referral from the dermatologist should check whether a so-called mediation code is printed on it. Because only with this twelve-digit code can patients use the appointment service of the medical associations. The service is part of the offer of patient service number 116 117, which has recently become available nationwide and around the clock.
Uniform across Germany since 2020
There has been an appointment service provided by the statutory health insurance associations for some time, but so far with different telephone numbers and opening times depending on the region. Since early 2020, patients from all over Germany have been able to dial 116 117 to find quick help in acute cases outside of regular doctor's office hours - and to arrange appointments with doctors and psychotherapists.
Can also be used online
If you don't want to search for a doctor by phone, you can alternatively use the online e-appointment service. Depending on the doctor, the arranged appointment should not be more than four weeks away, for psychotherapists there are only two and for contract doctors one. However, patients cannot choose the doctor - the practice only has to be at a reasonable distance.
Without a code, the appointment service only helps in certain cases
For this appointment service, however, patients need a so-called mediation code from their family doctor. This was the case before and has not changed with the new, nationwide model. Without a code, the appointment service only helps in certain cases - for example, when looking for a family doctor, gynecologist or pediatrician, as well as when looking for an ophthalmologist and when arranging psychotherapeutic consultations.
