After sex spotting

Almost every woman knows the problem of vaginal bleeding during or after intercourse. Affected women should not panic immediately. In most cases there is no need to worry because many factors can cause bleeding after sex, also called after-sex spotting. If bleeding occurs more frequently, a gynecologist should definitely be consulted for precise clarification.

Bleeding after intercourse - after sex spotting

Many women experience bleeding after intercourse at some point. The causes can be harmless factors such as vaginal dryness or violent sex. But serious diseases such as cervical cancer or infections can also cause the bleeding.

Measures for bleeding after sexual intercourse

There are many possible causes of bleeding after intercourse. Even if mostly harmless triggers are behind it, various diseases can also trigger the symptoms. Therefore, the following always applies to safety: Be sure to have all bleeding medically clarified.

Bleeding after intense intercourse

Very intense sex can cause mucosal bleeding, which is usually harmless and does not occur quickly. If there is light, light red bleeding after sexual intercourse, a small vessel in the vagina has often been injured. However, very heavy bleeding should not occur due to violent sex.

Injuries to the genital organ

Passionate sex can cause vaginal injuries. If the penis is rather large in relation to the vagina, an injury to the vaginal entrance can occur. Other reasons for an injury include, for example, strong mechanical stress from various positions in traffic or certain sexual practices and utensils such as vibrators.

Incorrect use of contraceptives

Bleeding during or after intercourse with contraceptives can occur if not used correctly. Examples of this are an incorrectly positioned copper spiral or intermenstrual bleeding because the pill or contraceptive ring have not been used consistently.

Cervical cancer as the cause of bleeding

If bleeding occurs during or after sexual intercourse, malignant (malignant) changes in the cervical tissue can also be the cause in an emergency. The so-called "cervix" (cervix uteri) is the lower part of the uterus, which opens into the vagina. The uterine cervix is an extremely sensitive area that is particularly susceptible to cell changes. If these are malignant, doctors speak of a “cervical carcinoma”, which according to the “German Green Cross” is the second most common malignant tumor worldwide among patients under the age of 45 and affects around 6000 women per year in Germany. Compared to many other cancers, more younger women tend to be affected, most often diagnosed with women between the ages of 40 and 59. The following signs may indicate cervical cancer, according to the “Cervical Cancer Patient Guideline”:

  • unusual bleeding, for example after menopause, outside of the menstrual period or after sexual intercourse,
  • Menstrual bleeding that lasts more than seven days,
  • malodorous vaginal discharge,
  • flesh-colored vaginal discharge,
  • Pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis,
  • Painful bowel movements or urination,
  • unusual swelling on one or both legs,
  • Pain in the flanks or back when the kidneys are jammed.

Chlamydia infection

Chlamydia infections are the most common sexually transmitted disease. The bacteria are also transferable in the event of unprotected oral sex. A chlamydial infection can also be noticed by bleeding. Since chlamydia can lead to infertility, an infection must be treated.

Vaginitis, cervicitis, endometritis

Bleeding during sex can also be caused by inflammation of the vagina (vaginitis) or inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis). Endometritis is an inflammation of the lining of the womb (endometrium) that can also cause bleeding. (fm)
