Unsustainable meat consumption: New online calculator shows the effects

Now everyone can see for themselves how his meat consumption affects

Meat in Germany is as popular as ever. Every citizen eats more than 60 kilograms a year. An unimaginably large mountain of meat comes together in 80 million people. The big problem is: To meet this need, the climate and the environment are destroyed, antibiotic-resistant germs are promoted and vast amounts of water are wasted. In a new online calculator, everyone can now calculate for themselves how their personal meat consumption will affect within the next ten years.

Meat is a special food. It used to be eaten in exceptional cases and for celebrations. According to the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, only around 15 kilos of meat were consumed per capita in 1850. This consumption has quadrupled while the population has increased. In contrast to vegetarian foods, much more effort and resources are required to produce the popular end product, because an animal first has to eat and grow before it can be eaten.

A new calculator shows the effects of meat consumption

According to the Federal Ministry for Renewable Resources, over 40 percent of the grain harvest ends up in the feed troughs of pork, beef and chicken. Over three kilograms of vegetable feed must be invested per kilogram of meat. Huge areas of land are needed to meet this feed requirement. The EU alone manages around 13 million hectares of arable land in South America. Only soybeans are used for animal feeding. Huge rainforest areas have been and will continue to be cut down to gain new cultivation and pasture land.

Antibiotics and mass breeding

Another problem of meat consumption: logically, in order to produce the masses of meat, masses of animals must also be kept. For this purpose, thousands of animals are crammed together in the factories in the smallest space. A condition in which pathogens spread very quickly. To prevent this, antibiotics are administered. 75 percent of the antibiotics used in Germany go to the animals that end up on the plate and only 25 percent to sick people. Double cranking of CO2 emissions

If you look at factory farming in relation to climate change, there is a double negative effect. On the one hand, forest areas are converted into grasslands that can convert much less CO2, and on the other hand, animals, especially cattle, also produce large amounts of CO2. A single beef releases about 200 liters of methane gas into the atmosphere every day. A small car has to travel around 18,000 kilometers for the same amount.

Every kilo of meat counts less

A new and free online meat calculator from the computing portal shows every single person how personal meat consumption will have an impact within the next ten years and which resources must be used for this. It also calculates how much can be saved if you do without a portion of the meat you choose. (vb)
